What is EXIF data?

Information cameras and phones embed in a photo file: model, date and time, exposure settings, and often GPS coordinates. It is invisible when viewing the picture but readable by anyone with the file.

Why should I remove it?

Mostly location. A photo taken at home carries coordinates accurate to a few metres, and sharing it publicly shares your address. Timestamps and camera models can also link separate accounts to the same person.

Do social networks strip it for me?

Most major platforms strip EXIF on upload, but not all, and not always for every size they generate. Direct file sharing — email, messaging apps sending as a document, cloud links — usually preserves it entirely.

Does removing metadata change the image?

Not visually. Stripping requires re-encoding from the pixels, which costs a small amount of quality in a lossy format. Choose PNG output if you want no loss at all.

Will my photo end up sideways?

No. Orientation is stored in EXIF, so removing it naively leaves portrait photos rotated. This tool applies the rotation to the pixels first, then strips the data.

What exactly gets removed?

Everything outside the pixels — EXIF, GPS, IPTC and XMP blocks, including camera model, timestamps, settings, copyright fields and any editing history.

Can I keep the copyright but remove the location?

Not selectively — re-encoding removes all of it at once. To assert ownership, use the Image Watermark tool, which is visible and survives copying.

How do I verify it worked?

Re-upload the cleaned file to this tool. It should report no metadata found. You can also check file properties in your operating system.

Is my photo uploaded?

No, and that matters here more than anywhere. Sending a photo to a server to strip its location data would expose exactly what you are trying to remove.
